"For Jean Fan, the road to becoming a photographer was less than direct. Jean says that she began experimenting with mediums such as charcoal and paints early on, but frequently lacked the concentration to finish her compositions. This led to her interest in photography, a field that she initially though would be less trying than traditional artistic disciplines. “I thought photography would be a faster and easier method of self expression,” Jean says, “Though as I get more and more involved with photography, I’ve learned that that’s totally not the case.”

"Jean bought herself a digital camera for Christmas in 2005 and began experimenting. Using outdated editing software from 1991, she also began refining her pictures. In 2006, she created an account on deviantArt, a website that allows artists to post their portfolios freely and comment on the works of others. Jean does what is considered conceptual photography, a style of photography that combines complex concepts with unique aestheticism. Her works are whimsical and often surreal – a headless model waters a tall, knobby-looking plant, while a simple composition entitled “Ovary” features a pear balancing on a naked stomach.

"“I believe art in general needs to be more than a pretty picture, she says. “It needs to also convey a worthy thought or a concept. Conceptual photography offers the best of both worlds: a shallow aesthetically, pleasing exterior and a deeper, thoughtful message.” Though she is uncertain whether or not she will become a full-time photographer, Jean knows that she would like to continue with her passion and sell her work. She plans to pursue a career in addition to photography."
